One example of Break-even period: We looked at the energy usage of Elizabeth, who has a large free-standing heritage house on there farm near Peak Hill in rural NSW, where she lives with her partner. They both work from home, which makes their energy use higher than most households, they are sick of constant blackouts, and looking to install Solar unit and Battery bank, to provide ALL there energy needs, thereafter allowing them feeding any excess power into the state grid.

This Micro-Grid calculator shows how Elizabeth can become FREE of the state power grid, it matched there daily peak power consumption of 28kW day (10'220 kW year) and with another electricity rate increase they now pay @27.47c/kWh =$815.00 per Quarter, including there rural "Service Supply charge" of $108.00 per quarter.

Elizabeth is planning a commercial cool room that will substantially increase there power usage, they also have an old un-used Diesel Generator, all that needs to be taken into consideration, as now the retail electricity rate has passes 25 cents kWh, it is actually cheaper to produce electricity using a Diesel generator, saying that not all generators are as economical or as clean a running as each other, and you may want to consider pollution and you can calculate your Green house gasses here.

Not for everyone: Diesel engines (also known as a compression-ignition or CI engine) were designed to operate on Vegetable Oil, and now will efficiently run long term on very finely filtered Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO), a FREE readily available resource that is bio-degradable.

So, if Elizabeth installed a 3.5kW fixed tilted solar array with all the panels facing North, she can only expect to generate around 15kW of peak power on a average day, as "tilted fixed panel solar arrays" will only harvest 4hrs of Peak energy, with a few kW of energy harvested on the shoulder ramping period each morning & evening.  With Elizabeth out-laying an additional $3'300 to purchase a 12 panel dual-axis solar panel tracking array kit (DAT), there harvesting is greatly increase to exceed there daily kW usage.

Elizabeth's System Payback Break-Even time with a 12 panel DAT array producing 34kWh per 10hr day, saves Elizabeth paying for 28kWh @$0.275 c/kWh for power, save $7.70 per day.  So, if the farm uses 10kWh day during solar hours and 18kWh for the remainder of a 24hr day, leaving 6kW of excess power available to Export into the state power grid, this calculates to 6kWh @$0.08c/kWh a day =$0.48 per day or $175.00 yearly feed-in Tariff, that equates to a total power saving of $3'400 per year, providing approx. 78 month pay back period using Nickel Iron batteries, then the next 20~30+ years Power will be FREE!

Obviously, if they choose to produce more power by installing a larger Solar array and operating their decommissioned Diesel Generator on Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO), it will provide a quicker payback time.  Best-case scenario, WVO is a game changer by producing additional power for virtually free!
