Energy management systems
Now that solar Feed-in-Tariff (rebate rates) are so low across Australia, there’s little reason for any solar system owner to send their excess energy back into the state grid, as they would save far more money by 'self-consuming' their own generated energy. That is the main reasons the popularity of energy storage has grown rapidly, batteries provide an unprecedented degree of energy self-sufficiency for households and businesses.
If you already have a Solar system without batteries, then becoming totally energy independent will be a LOT cheaper, as you only need to purchase energy storage with a capacity slightly greater than your Overnight energy consumption, the larger the better!
Note: Although, we recommend you maintain you grid connection as back-up, even with the low Feed-in-Tarrif, as any excess energy may cover your "supply charge", or alternatively install a cheap $800 small 3.5kW silenced automatic start generator to blackout proof your premises, that Generator is very economical and able be operated on FREE Bio-gas, LPG or Petrol.
LATEST NEWS: With the introduction of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Energy Trading in Australia, the future of the energy sector may have changed forever, as P2P energy trading allows solar system owners to cut out the middle man, being the Electrical Retailers, by selling there energy Directly to consumers!
Energy Retailers (are Not really Retailers)
However, having a solar & battery system that harvests & stores all of your energy consumption, allows you to eliminate your energy bills, and that allows you the option to choose who you export/sell any excess energy to!
Power Ledger (P2P) energy trading, can/will harvest some or equal to all of your normal un-used stored energy, this is done by automatically harvesting the energy from your batteries at a premium on the spot market price, this Harvesting can happen 24/7, usually only when the state grid in your area requests more energy, obviously this is better than 6 cents per kW feed-in Tariff that most retailers offer.
Spot market price spikes have certainly increased in the last few years, whether or not this will remain a permanent feature of the wholesale market is unknown, in Australia with the abundance and affordability of Solar, also open the way for the possibility of Pumped Hydro, meaning during the day water is pumped back upstream (higher elevation) to a Dam, Lake etc. then the water is released and used in Peak demand times, like in the evening, But whilst we have dumb self serving politicians in office we may never see this happening unless privately funded, however the future looks bright in this area due to the current cost of Solar.
The Higher number of energy spikes mean bigger savings for Peak Time selective energy harvesting!
Peak Time Rebate (PTR):
How much will a selective harvesting program actually earn you?
The answer is impossible to know, given the range variables that come into play, however an educated guesses would be from $0.30~$1.00kWh, as we assumed the system owner will earn 40c/kWh every time the spot market price goes over 50c/kWh, or 90c/kWh every time it goes over $1.00/kWh (NB: Retailer keeps 10% commission, and they don't actually supply or pay for the power you receive)
We looked at three export volume scenarios: Whether the home/business exports 0.5kWh, 1kWh or 3kWh at each price spike.
Over the first three months of 2017, the amount of credit that someone could earn from selective harvest could range between as little as $3 to as much as nearly $350 – depending on the state, the rate paid and amount of energy harvested/sent back to the grid. At the moment, Queensland appears to be the best place for selective Retailer harvest programs.
Also keep in mind the fact that opportunities to benefit from selective harvesting are likely to increase as the grid becomes more distributed and interactive, as more home energy systems get equipped with ‘gateway’ technologies, as in-home energy management systems that enable selective harvesting are likely to grow.
So, don’t forget the main way that solar & battery system owners will save money is to use their energy themselves. Selective harvesting programs will always be a bonus on top of the savings made through self-consumption.
These are some of the better Energy Retailers;
- (1) NSW: Red Energy is 100% owned by Snowy Mountains Hydro.
- (2) QLD/NSW/VIC: Power Shop is Canberra based company.
- (3) ACT: Simply Energy Canberra based company.
- (4) QLD/NSW/VIC/SA: Diamond Energy Victorian based company.
- (5) Origin Energy offer 20c kWh Rebate, but Only if you purchase their over-priced Solar System.
Remember: You will note we are not focused on large profits like many business, we hope you will consider what we are offering, the bottom line is you will always need to get a qualified electrician to grid connect your system, we only offer the gateway to true independent Wholesale prices, allowing you to build your own affordable Micro Power Grid.
